PAEC is the NEXRAD weather radar for Nome, Alaska. The antenna stands about 5.5 km east of the town, in the Nome Census Area.
It is a WSR-88D. The NEXRAD Radar Operations Center lists it as Nome FAA, one of the 12 radars in its Federal Aviation Administration group, and names the National Weather Service forecast office in Fairbanks as the responsible office. The Fairbanks office describes it as the weather radar it uses at Nome.
In August 2017 the office described the radar as 20 years old when a crew installed a new signal processor, the first of four major upgrades planned to keep the WSR-88D fleet running into the 2030s. The nearest other places of any size, Shishmaref to the north and Stebbins, Kotlik and Emmonak to the south and southeast, are all more than 180 km from the antenna.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
