KVWX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Evansville, Indiana. The antenna does not stand in the city: it is at Owensville in Gibson County, about 35 km northwest of Evansville, with Fort Branch 13 km to the east, Princeton 17 km to the northeast and Mount Carmel, Illinois, 17 km to the north. Henderson, Kentucky, is about 49 km to the south.
The radar was added to the network years after the original deployment; the Wikipedia list of sites notes that radars at Evansville and Fort Smith filled gaps in coverage after the initial installations. The Radar Operations Center's history records that a requirement for a radar at Evansville was confirmed in June 1999, an interim radar became operational in April 2000, ground was broken for the permanent radar in September 2002, and the permanent Evansville radar became operational in January 2003. It is owned by the National Weather Service, and the Paducah, Kentucky forecast office is responsible for it; in March 2017 it received the first of four major upgrades under the Service Life Extension Program.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
