KLVX is the Louisville weather radar, a NEXRAD WSR-88D operated by the National Weather Service. The antenna does not stand in Louisville: the Radar Operations Center gives its location as Fort Knox, the United States Army installation in Hardin County south of the city, and the Louisville forecast office is responsible for it.
The Louisville office's history says the WSR-88D at Fort Knox went into service on 29 November 1994, after a WSR-3 on the airport terminal roof from 1962 and a WSR-74C dedicated in 1978. West Point and Muldraugh are the nearest towns, Radcliff and Elizabethtown lie to the south, and Louisville is about 35 km to the northeast with New Albany and Jeffersonville across the river in Indiana.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
