KVAX is the Moody AFB WSR-88D radar, a Department of Defense site in south Georgia. The antenna stands in Lanier County, where NCEI records the site as South Stockton, about 23 km east-southeast of Moody Air Force Base and 27 km east-northeast of Valdosta. Stockton is an unincorporated community in Lanier County. Moody Air Force Base is a US Air Force installation near Valdosta.
The NWS Radar Operations Center lists KVAX among the DoD radars and the NWS radar list gives the owner as the Department of Defense. The responsible forecast office is NWS Jacksonville in Florida, which lists it as the Valdosta/Moody AFB radar beside its own Jacksonville radar, KJAX. The Florida line lies about 20 km to the south of the antenna, with Jasper the nearest Florida town in the list.
NCEI's archive of the radar's Level II data begins on 17 October 1996.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
