KRIW is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar at the National Weather Service office west of Riverton, Wyoming, in Fremont County. The NWS lists the station as Riverton/Lander; the Radar Operations Center gives the radar site as Riverton and NCEI carries the name Riverton with WBAN number 24061. The Western and Central Wyoming forecast office at 12744 West US Highway 26 runs it.
The office history says Riverton was chosen over Lander because Lander's position next to the mountains would hinder the radar, and that the city of Riverton donated a 10 acre parcel for both the radar and the forecast office. Forecast office operations began in Riverton on 28 August 1995 with a staff of 18, and the radar was formally accepted on 10 April 1996. From 1996 the office took warning responsibility for eleven counties in western and central Wyoming: Big Horn, Fremont, Hot Springs, Johnson, Lincoln, Natrona, Park, Sublette, Sweetwater, Teton and Washakie. In January 2019 the pedestal was replaced in a three week outage under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program.
Riverton is about 9 km to the east of the antenna and Arapahoe about 12 km to the south. Ethete is about 24 km to the west, Lander about 33 km to the south-west and Fort Washakie about 34 km to the west.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
