KCYS is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar at Cheyenne, Wyoming, standing in Laramie County about 2 km from the city centre. The National Weather Service runs it from the Cheyenne forecast office at 1301 Airport Parkway, which serves south-east Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle. The NWS Radar Operations Center lists the station as Cheyenne with the radar site at Cheyenne, and NCEI records it with WBAN number 24018, its record beginning in November 1995.
The NWS radar list gives the antenna elevation as 6,193 feet and the owner as the NWS. In August 2022 the radar was down for about seven days while its generator, fuel tanks and related components were replaced, the fifth major project of the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program; the office named the Riverton, Rapid City, North Platte, Goodland, Denver and Grand Junction radars as the neighbours to use meanwhile.
Ranchettes is about 8 km to the north of the antenna and South Greeley about 6 km to the south. Laramie is about 68 km to the west. Across the state line, Fort Collins, Colorado, is about 67 km to the south-west, Greeley about 81 km to the south and Loveland about 87 km to the south-west.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
