KMUX is a NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar on Mount Umunhum in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Santa Clara County, California, about 10 km from Los Gatos and 20 km south of San Jose. The National Weather Service lists it as San Francisco, which is 83 km away. The Radar Operations Center gives the antenna's location as Los Gatos, and the Monterey forecast office, which serves the San Francisco Bay Area, is responsible for it.
The radar is an S-band, dual-polarised WSR-88D. It stands about 400 m south of the summit, on ground dominated by chaparral such as coyote brush, manzanita and chamise. CAL FIRE's Santa Clara Unit filed a notice to clear vegetation within 200 feet of it to reduce the fuel around the installation. Mount Umunhum is the fourth-highest peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains and lies mostly within the Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve.
Wikipedia's list of NEXRAD sites gives March 1994 as the start of its data record.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
