KMTX is the National Weather Service WSR-88D weather radar for Salt Lake City and northern Utah. It stands near Promontory Point, where the Promontory Mountains reach into the northern Great Salt Lake, about 73 km north-west of Salt Lake City and 40 km west of Ogden.
The NWS Salt Lake City forecast office is responsible for the radar and describes it on its radar page as the one serving much of northern Utah. The Radar Operations Center's site table lists the RDA location as Salt Lake City, and the NWS radar list gives the antenna elevation as 6,594 ft. The NWS owns the radar.
The WSR-88D network was deployed between 1992 and 1997, and its sites were upgraded to dual polarization between 2010 and 2013.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
