KILX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Lincoln, Illinois. The antenna stands at the National Weather Service Central Illinois office on State Route 10 at the edge of Lincoln, in Logan County, about 2 km from the town centre. Springfield is about 47 km to the southwest, Bloomington and Normal about 47 km to the northeast, Decatur 47 km to the southeast and Peoria 64 km to the northwest.
The radar is owned and operated by the National Weather Service. Construction of the WSR-88D at Lincoln began in the spring of 1995, and in September 1995 the new Lincoln office took over the counties of the Peoria and Springfield offices, which closed on October 1, 1995. The office says its radar was installed in 1995. Under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program it received a new signal processor in 2017, a new transmitter in 2019 and a new equipment shelter in 2021, followed by work on the pedestal.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
