KLOT is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Chicago, Illinois. The antenna does not stand in the city: it is operated by the National Weather Service in Romeoville, in Will County, about 45 km southwest of downtown Chicago. Lockport is about 3 km away, Romeoville 5 km, Joliet 9 km and Bolingbrook 11 km.
The radar is owned and operated by the National Weather Service. Under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program it received a new signal processor as the first of four major upgrades to the 20-year-old radar, and in May 2022 its pedestal, the 16-foot structure that supports and turns the 28-foot dish, was replaced; the office noted then that the radar and pedestal were designed to last 25 years and had exceeded that life-span. NCEI's data record for the site begins in December 1994.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
