KHDX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar at Holloman Air Force Base in southern New Mexico. The antenna stands about 10 km from Tularosa, 25 km from Alamogordo and 25 km from the base itself. The Department of Defense owns it. The National Weather Service office in El Paso, at Santa Teresa, New Mexico, is the responsible forecast office; its radar page offers KHDX beside its own El Paso radar, KEPZ, and the office forecasts for southern New Mexico and far west Texas. The NWS lists the antenna at 4,270 feet above sea level.
Holloman Air Force Base was established in 1942 as Alamogordo Army Air Field, about six miles southwest of Alamogordo, and is home to the 49th Wing. NCEI's archive of KHDX data begins in July 1994.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
