KFDX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar at Cannon Air Force Base in eastern New Mexico. The antenna stands in Curry County northwest of Clovis, about 46 km from the city, 38 km from the base itself and 23 km from Melrose. The Department of Defense owns it; the base is home to the Air Force's 27th Special Operations Wing. The National Weather Service office in Albuquerque is the responsible forecast office and uses KFDX alongside its own radar on Albuquerque's West Mesa. The NWS lists the antenna at 4,698 feet above sea level.
NWS Albuquerque describes KFDX as the only radar for portions of eastern New Mexico and directs questions about it to Cannon AFB Public Affairs. NCEI's archive of KFDX data begins in June 1994.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
