KHDC is the National Weather Service NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar at Hammond, Louisiana, in Tangipahoa Parish. The NWS forecast office for New Orleans and Baton Rouge, which is at Slidell, is the office responsible for it. Hammond lies about 72 km east of Baton Rouge and 72 km northwest of New Orleans.
The radar replaced KLIX, which stood beside the forecast office in Slidell. The office announced in 2021 that the radar would move west to Hammond and that its lowest elevation angle would drop to 0.3 degrees, giving a much better view of low-level winds and developing tornadoes in the Baton Rouge area. Wikipedia's list of NEXRAD sites gives 23 March 2024 as the start of the Hammond radar's data record.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
