KDGX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Jackson, Mississippi. The antenna stands at Brandon in Rankin County, the suburb east of the state capital, about 19 km from downtown Jackson and 14 km from Pearl. The National Weather Service's Jackson forecast office, at the north end of Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport at 234 Weather Service Drive in Flowood, says it maintains the Brandon WSR-88D.
The NWS Radar Operations Center names the station Jackson/Brandon, MS and lists the radar site as Brandon. NCEI's station inventory carries the principal name Jackson Brandon with the alias Brandon and the NWS location identifier DGX, and dates its record from February 2003. Wikipedia's list of NEXRAD sites gives KDGX a data start of February 2003 and separately lists an earlier Jackson radar, KJAN in Hinds County, with data from June 1994.
The Jackson office's history says a Weather Bureau office opened at the Jackson airport in 1963 and became the forecast office for much of Mississippi in 1972.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
