KGRK is the WSR-88D weather radar the NWS names Ft Hood, after the US Army post near Killeen. The antenna does not stand on the post: it is beside Granger in Williamson County, 6 km east of the town and 55 km southeast of Killeen, and the NWS also calls it the Central Texas or Granger radar. The NWS radar list records the owner as the Department of Defense; the NWS forecast office in Fort Worth is responsible for it.
The radar is part of the NEXRAD network. In November 2022 the NWS scheduled a week-long outage to replace its generator and fuel tanks under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, a set of upgrades meant to keep the network running into the 2030s. Taylor, Georgetown and Round Rock are the closest larger places; Temple is 42 km to the north, Austin 61 km to the southwest and Waco 95 km to the north.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
