KHGX is the National Weather Service's WSR-88D weather radar for Houston and Galveston. The antenna stands in Galveston County between Dickinson and League City, 3 km from the centre of Dickinson and 4 km from League City; the NWS Radar Operations Center records the site as Dickinson. Downtown Houston is 42 km to the northwest and Galveston 33 km to the southeast.
The radar is part of the NEXRAD network and is run by the NWS Houston/Galveston forecast office, at 1353 FM 646 in Dickinson. The office's own history says it moved to League City in October 1990 and stayed there, with the new WSR-88D radar, until April 2005, when it moved into the Galveston County Emergency Management Facility on FM 646, a building designed to resist hurricanes that the NWS shares with the county's emergency management and 911 services.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
