KEWX is the National Weather Service's WSR-88D weather radar for Austin and San Antonio. The antenna stands in Comal County just east of New Braunfels, 9 km from the town centre, roughly midway between the two cities: San Antonio is 55 km to the southwest and Austin 68 km to the northeast. The NWS forecast office for Austin/San Antonio, which runs the radar, is next to New Braunfels Regional Airport. The San Antonio office moved to New Braunfels in 1994 and 1995, when it was consolidated with the Austin, Del Rio and Hondo offices, and the same office is responsible for the Laughlin AFB radar, KDFX.

KEWX is part of the NEXRAD network. In January 2020 its pedestal, the assembly that turns and tilts the antenna, was replaced under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program; the NWS noted at the time that the radar had passed the 25-year design life of the original hardware.

The NWS Austin/San Antonio office documents that bats leaving Bracken Cave, less than 20 miles from the radar, appear on summer evenings as an expanding ring of echoes that can reach 40 to 50 dBZ, values otherwise seen in a moderate shower or weak thunderstorm. Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
