KFWS is the National Weather Service's WSR-88D weather radar for Dallas and Fort Worth. The antenna stands at Fort Worth Spinks Airport, a city-owned airport in Tarrant County south of downtown Fort Worth, beside Burleson. The NWS Fort Worth office records that construction of the radar began at Spinks Airport in late 1993 and that it became operational in December 1994. Arlington is 26 km to the northeast and Dallas 52 km.
The radar is part of the NEXRAD network and is run by the NWS forecast office in Fort Worth, on Northern Cross Boulevard on the north side of the city, which moved there from the downtown federal building in November 1993 and is responsible for 46 counties across North and Central Texas. The same office is also responsible for the Fort Hood radar, KGRK, to the south.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
