KDYX is the WSR-88D weather radar named for Dyess Air Force Base, and the one the NWS San Angelo office labels the Abilene radar. The antenna does not stand on the base. Dyess is a US Air Force base about 11 km southwest of downtown Abilene; the radar is in Shackelford County, 46 km east of Abilene and 21 km south of Albany. Clyde and Baird lie to the southwest, Cisco and Eastland to the southeast and Breckenridge to the northeast.
The NWS radar list records the owner as the Department of Defense, and the NWS forecast office in San Angelo is responsible for it. The radar is part of the NEXRAD network, which the National Weather Service, the Federal Aviation Administration and the US Air Force operate between them.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
