KFSD is the Sioux Falls WSR-88D weather radar. It stands at the National Weather Service forecast office at 26 Weather Lane in Minnehaha County, about 5 km north of the centre of Sioux Falls. The NWS owns and operates it.
The office moved into the Weather Lane building on 14 September 1993, built to house the new Doppler radar. The WSR-88D was switched on on 3 December 1993 and commissioned on 18 October 1995 as the official radar for the Sioux Falls forecast office. It replaced a WSR-74C that had watched the area since April 1976 and was decommissioned in the fall of 1996. The office's first radar, a WSR-1 taken from a Second World War aircraft, went into service in April 1956.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
