KABR is the Aberdeen, South Dakota WSR-88D weather radar. It stands in Brown County about 6 km east of Aberdeen; Groton is 25 km to the east and Ellendale, North Dakota, 62 km to the north. The National Weather Service owns and operates it, and the Aberdeen forecast office is responsible for it.
The radar has been through the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program. Its signal processor and transmitter were replaced first. In March 2021 technicians lifted off the 39 foot radome and replaced the 16 foot, 17,420 pound pedestal with a refurbished one, and the radar was back in service on 18 March. In October 2022 the standby generator and fuel tanks were replaced so the radar can keep running when commercial power fails. The office names Rapid City, Bismarck, Grand Forks, Minneapolis, Sioux Falls and North Platte as the radars to use when KABR is down.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
