KCRP is the National Weather Service's WSR-88D weather radar for Corpus Christi. The antenna stands in Nueces County on the west side of the city, 11 km from the centre, with Robstown 16 km further west. It is part of the NEXRAD network and is run by the NWS forecast office for Corpus Christi, on Pinson Drive on the grounds of Corpus Christi International Airport.
Weather radar in Corpus Christi goes back to a WSR-74C local warning radar that began operating in February 1976. The NWS station history records that the present office opened in November 1995 as part of the service's modernization, a new facility built to work with the WSR-88D Doppler radar. Earlier Weather Bureau offices in the city had also been at the airports, first at Cliff Maus Field from 1939 and then in the international airport tower building from 1960.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
