KDFX is the WSR-88D weather radar named for Laughlin Air Force Base, near Del Rio. The antenna does not stand on the base: it is in Kinney County, 14 km east of Brackettville, while Laughlin itself lies east of Del Rio about 50 km further west. The NWS radar list records the owner as the Department of Defense, and the NWS forecast office in New Braunfels (Austin/San Antonio), which lists the radar as Laughlin AFB (Del Rio), is responsible for it.
The radar is part of the NEXRAD network, which the National Weather Service, the Federal Aviation Administration and the US Air Force operate between them. Laughlin Air Force Base is a US Air Force installation. Uvalde is 48 km to the east, and Ciudad Acuña and Piedras Negras, across the border in Mexico, are both within about 70 km of the antenna.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
