KEVX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar named for Eglin Air Force Base in northwest Florida. The antenna stands in Walton County, at a site NCEI lists under the alias Red Bay, about 25 km southeast of DeFuniak Springs and about 50 km northwest of Panama City. The NWS radar list records the owner as the Department of Defense. The NWS Mobile/Pensacola office is the responsible forecast office; it says it operates the radar in coordination with Eglin Air Force Base and labels it the Northwest Florida radar.
NCEI's archive of KEVX data begins in August 1994. In 2023 the radar went through the last phase of the WSR-88D Service Life Extension Program, in which the pedestal that turns the antenna was replaced. The program refurbished the major components of the network's radars to keep them in service into the 2030s.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
