KESX is the National Weather Service WSR-88D weather radar for Las Vegas, Nevada. The antenna stands on top of Nelson Peak at roughly 5,000 ft, which the NWS Las Vegas office describes as about 35 air miles southeast of the office. That puts it about 57 km southeast of Las Vegas, 38 km from Henderson and 31 km south of Boulder City.
The radar is part of the NEXRAD network. The Radar Operations Center lists it among the NWS sites in its Western Region, with the Las Vegas forecast office responsible for it. It was commissioned in June 1995, and NCEI's archive of its data begins in the same month. Under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program its transmitter was refurbished, with equipment original to the radar replaced.
The Las Vegas office's warning area takes in parts of Nevada, California and Arizona, about 70,000 square miles, with both the lowest and the highest points in the contiguous United States in it or on its border.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
