KENX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Albany, New York. The antenna stands at East Berne in the town of Berne, at the western border of Albany County, about 26 km from Albany, 27 km from Schenectady and 34 km from Troy. The National Weather Service operates it from its Albany forecast office, which serves eastern New York and parts of western New England: southern Vermont, western Massachusetts and northwestern Connecticut. The NWS lists the antenna at 1,935 feet above sea level.
In November 2019 the office refurbished the transmitter under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program and described KENX as a 20-year-old radar. It had been upgraded to dual polarization by April 2012, when NWS Binghamton listed it among the neighbouring radars already converted. NCEI's archive of KENX data begins in April 1995.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
