KDMX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Des Moines, Iowa. The antenna stands with the National Weather Service office on NW Beaver Drive in Johnston, on the northwestern edge of the Des Moines metro area, with Saylorville Lake behind it. Downtown Des Moines is about 17 km to the southeast, Ankeny 10 km to the east, Urbandale 12 km to the south and Polk City 5 km to the north.
The office moved to Johnston on September 1, 1993 and received its WSR-88D Doppler radar in 1994; NCEI's data record for the site begins in June 1995. The radar is owned and operated by the National Weather Service in Des Moines. Under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, meant to keep the radar working for another 20 years or more, the office refurbished the radar's emergency power generator in March 2021.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
