KARX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar at the National Weather Service office in La Crosse, Wisconsin, a few kilometres east of the city centre. The NWS La Crosse forecast office at 711 County Road FA runs it. The NWS Radar Operations Center lists the station as La Crosse with the radar site at La Crosse, and NCEI records it in La Crosse County with WBAN number 94987, its record beginning in September 1996.
The NWS radar list gives the antenna elevation as 1,357 feet and the owner as the NWS. The office refurbished the radar's transmitter under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, replacing breakers and cables original to the radar; it described this as the second major project of a program funded by the NWS, the US Air Force and the Federal Aviation Administration to keep the radar network running into the 2030s.
La Crosse's centre is about 5 km to the west of the antenna and Onalaska about 8 km to the north-west. La Crescent, Minnesota, is about 9 km to the west, Holmen about 17 km to the north, West Salem about 12 km to the north-east, Sparta about 33 km to the east and Winona, Minnesota, about 44 km to the north-west.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
