KBUF is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Buffalo, New York. The antenna stands in Erie County about 13 km from downtown Buffalo, less than 2 km from Williamsville and 5 km from Cheektowaga. The National Weather Service operates it from its Buffalo forecast office, which is on the grounds of Buffalo Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga. Much of the office's work is lake effect snow downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, and its pages also present the Montague radar, KTYX. The NWS lists the antenna at 790 feet above sea level.
In 2019 the National Weather Service completed an environmental assessment for lowering the radar's minimum scan angle from 0.5 to 0.3 degrees. NCEI's archive of KBUF data begins in April 1996.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
