KAPX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar near Gaylord in northern lower Michigan. The National Weather Service runs it from its Gaylord forecast office at 8800 Passenheim Road, which lists it as the local radar. The NWS Radar Operations Center carries the station under the system name Alpena (Gaylord) with the radar site at Gaylord, and the NWS radar service names it NCL Michigan; NCEI names the forecast office North Central Lower Michigan.
NCEI's station inventory records the site under the principal name Gaylord, with the alias NCL Michigan and WBAN number 04837, and dates its record from August 1996. Wikipedia's list of NEXRAD sites gives a data start of May 1996 and places the radar in Otsego County; NCEI lists Antrim County for the same coordinates.
Gaylord lies about 14 km to the north-north-east of the antenna. Grayling is about 27 km to the south, Traverse City about 73 km to the west and Petoskey about 55 km to the north-north-west.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
