PHKM is the Kamuela/Kohala Apt WSR-88D radar at the northern end of the Big Island of Hawaii. It stands atop Kohala, the oldest of the five volcanoes that make up the island, about 12 km from Kapaau, 14 km from Hawi and 16 km from Waimea, the town also known as Kamuela. Its antenna is the highest of the Hawaii radars, listed by the NWS at 3,966 ft.
The NWS Honolulu forecast office calls it the Kohala radar (PHKM), and its radar notices call it the Upolu Point/North Kohala radar (PHKM/UPP). NCEI records the site as Kamuela. The NWS Radar Operations Center lists it among the FAA radars and the NWS radar list gives the owner as the Federal Aviation Administration. It is one of two WSR-88D radars on the island; the other, PHWA, stands near Naalehu to the south. The four Hawaii radars give the Honolulu office reflectivity and velocity data about storms affecting the area.
NCEI's archive of the radar's Level II data begins on 23 July 1998.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
