PHKI is the South Kauai WSR-88D radar, the only NEXRAD radar on Kauai. It stands on the south side of the island in Kauai County, about 4 km from Kalaheo and Eleele, 5 km from Hanapepe and 21 km from Lihue. Kalaheo is an unincorporated community on the island of Kauai.
The NWS Honolulu forecast office calls it the Kauai radar (PHKI/SOK). The NWS Radar Operations Center lists it among the FAA radars and the NWS radar list gives the owner as the Federal Aviation Administration. It is one of four WSR-88D radars in the state of Hawaii, one each on Kauai and Molokai and two on the Big Island, which give the Honolulu office reflectivity and velocity data about storms affecting the area.
NCEI's archive of the radar's Level II data begins on 5 January 1996.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
