KVBX is a NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar in Santa Barbara County, California, about 5 km southeast of Orcutt and 13 km south of Santa Maria. The National Weather Service lists it as Vandenberg AFB and the Radar Operations Center as Vandenberg SFB. The ROC counts it among the four network radars not controlled by a forecast office; its control facility is at Orcutt and the agency named is AFWA, the Air Force Weather Agency, now the 557th Weather Wing.
Vandenberg Space Force Base, previously Vandenberg Air Force Base, is a space launch base established in 1941; it lies about 15 km southwest of the antenna. Lompoc is 23 km to the south, Nipomo 24 km to the north and San Luis Obispo 55 km to the north-northwest.
Wikipedia's list of NEXRAD sites gives November 1995 as the start of its data record.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
