KUDX is the Rapid City WSR-88D weather radar. It stands in Pennington County beside New Underwood, about 32 km east of Rapid City and 20 km east of Ellsworth Air Force Base. The National Weather Service owns and operates it, and the Rapid City forecast office at 300 East Signal Drive is responsible for it.
The NWS lists the site as Rapid City, SD, while the Radar Operations Center gives the radar data acquisition location as New Underwood and NCEI's station record carries New Underwood as an alias. The Aberdeen and Sioux Falls offices both name KUDX as an adjacent radar to use when their own radars are down for maintenance.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
