KLNX is the National Weather Service WSR-88D weather radar named for North Platte, Nebraska. The antenna does not stand in the city: it is about 94 km to the north, 2 km from the village of Thedford, and the NWS lists the site simply as North Platte.
The radar is part of the NEXRAD network. The Radar Operations Center lists it among the NWS sites in its Central Region, with the North Platte forecast office responsible for it. It was commissioned in May 1996, and NCEI's archive of its data begins in the same month.
The North Platte office itself sits at Lee Bird Field, the city's airport, in a building put up in 1994 beside the airport administration building; the office had moved in fully by the summer of 1995.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
