KMSX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Missoula, Montana. The antenna stands in Missoula County about 19 km north of the city, at an elevation of 2417 m. The National Weather Service operates it; the Radar Operations Center lists the Missoula forecast office, at 6633 Aviation Way, as the responsible office, and lists Missoula among its redundant sites with two radar data acquisition units.
The Radar Operations Center gives a commissioning date of 1 June 1995 and a tower height of 10 m. NCEI's archive of the radar's data begins in January 1995. NWS Missoula has described refurbishing the radar's pedestal under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, funded by the NWS, the US Air Force and the FAA, and names KTFX near Great Falls, KOTX near Spokane, KCBX near Boise, KSFX near Pocatello and KPDT near Pendleton as the adjacent radars. Lolo, Frenchtown, Arlee, Seeley Lake and Kalispell are among the nearby places.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
