KLBB is the National Weather Service WSR-88D weather radar for Lubbock, Texas. It stands at the Lubbock airport, about 9 km north of the city centre, in Lubbock County.
The NWS Lubbock forecast office is responsible for the radar. The office's history page records that the WSR-88D was commissioned at the Lubbock airport on 4 April 1994, replacing a WSR-74C installed there in August 1973, the first radar of that model in the NWS. Lubbock was chosen for that earlier radar after the F5 tornado of May 1970, which struck the weather office itself. The forecast office moved from the airport to the Science Spectrum building in December 1993, while weather observations stayed at the airport.
The NWS lists the antenna elevation as 3,378 ft, and the radar is owned by the NWS.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
