KILN is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Cincinnati, Ohio. It stands next to the National Weather Service forecast office in Wilmington, Clinton County, about 68 km northeast of Cincinnati, 49 km southeast of Dayton and 93 km southwest of Columbus. The NWS lists the station as Cincinnati/Wilmington and the Wilmington office operates it, with forecast and warning responsibility for 52 counties in southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana.
The office was built in 1993 and opened in February 1994 to replace the Weather Service offices in Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton. Wilmington was chosen as a central point between the three cities, and the office says a radar beside it would scan all three well. The tower stands more than 150 feet tall. The old WSR-57 radar at the Greater Cincinnati airport, in testing from June 1960, was decommissioned on June 21, 1996 in favour of the new WSR-88D at Wilmington.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
