KGYX is the National Weather Service NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar at Gray, Maine, in Cumberland County. The NWS names the station Portland, ME, and its Gray/Portland forecast office, at 1 Weather Lane in Gray, is responsible for it. Gray is a town midway between Portland and Lewiston, the state's two largest cities, where several state routes meet the Maine Turnpike. NCEI's station record begins in May 1995, and Wikipedia's list of NEXRAD sites gives March 1995 as the start of its data.
In late October 2022 the office took the radar out of service for about two weeks so that technicians could refurbish and replace the pedestal that rotates and positions the antenna. The radome had to be lifted off by crane for the work, the fourth project of the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
