KFTG is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Denver. The antenna stands at the Colorado Air and Space Port, the former Front Range Airport, near Watkins east of the city, about 38 km from downtown Denver and 25 km from Aurora. The Radar Operations Center lists its site as Front Range Airport, and NCEI names the station Denver Front Range Airport. The NWS gives its antenna elevation as 5,611 feet.
The radar is owned and operated by the National Weather Service and run from the Denver/Boulder forecast office in Boulder. NCEI's station record for it begins in July 1994. Under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program its antenna pedestal was refurbished, and its generator and fuel tanks were replaced so the radar keeps running through commercial power outages.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
