KCLX is the Charleston, South Carolina WSR-88D weather radar. It stands near Grays, about 105 km west of Charleston, 43 km from Beaufort and 64 km north of Savannah, Georgia. The National Weather Service owns and operates it, and the Charleston forecast office in North Charleston is responsible for it.
The Charleston office describes the radar as transmitting at 750,000 watts from a 28 foot dish inside its radome, and says it was upgraded to dual polarization in 2012. In June 2020 it was down for about eight days while the generator and fuel tanks were replaced under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, with Columbia, Wilmington, Jacksonville, Robins AFB and Moody AFB named as the radars to use meanwhile.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
