KCLE is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Cleveland, Ohio. It stands at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, on the west side of the field near the NASA hangar, where the office says it can be seen from Interstate 480 or Brookpark Road; downtown Cleveland is about 17 km to the northeast. The National Weather Service operates it from the Cleveland forecast office, which moved from the airport to Brooklyn Heights in 2020 and serves 28 counties in northern Ohio, 2 in northwest Pennsylvania and most of Lake Erie.
Radar has a long history at the airport. A WSR-3 was commissioned there in May 1957, replaced by a WSR-74C in August 1976 and by the present WSR-88D on February 9, 1995. In August 2015 KCLE joined a field test of the MESO SAILS scanning option, which adds low-level scans within a volume scan. The transmitter was refurbished in September 2017 and the pedestal replaced in March 2022 under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
