KTWX is the Topeka weather radar, a NEXRAD WSR-88D operated by the National Weather Service. The antenna does not stand in Topeka: it is near Alma, the county seat of Wabaunsee County, about 48 km west of the city, and the Topeka forecast office is responsible for it.
The office's history says the radar was updated to a WSR-88D and moved to near Alma in May 1993, replacing a WSR-74C in Topeka whose antenna was removed while its tower remains beside the office. The WSR-88D was commissioned in January 1995 and upgraded to dual-polarisation in January 2012. Manhattan is about 36 km to the northwest and Wamego about 24 km to the north.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
