KMLB is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Melbourne, Florida. It stands at the NWS Melbourne forecast office on Croton Road, in Brevard County, about 6 km northwest of the city centre. The National Weather Service operates it. The office is responsible for 10 counties in east central Florida and 6 Atlantic marine zones.
NWS Melbourne was the first office opened under the NWS modernization, in 1989. Construction of its WSR-88D began in January 1991 and the radar began operational use in October 1991, the second WSR-88D in the nation and the first in a sub-tropical, maritime climate. The radar and facility were dedicated on March 31, 1994, when Melbourne became the third NWS office in the nation, and the first east of the Mississippi, to commission a WSR-88D. The radar supports the space program: its users include NOAA's Spaceflight Meteorology Group and the Applied Meteorology Unit at Kennedy Space Center.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
