KMHX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Morehead City, North Carolina. It stands in Newport, Carteret County, behind the National Weather Service forecast office at 533 Roberts Road, about 15 km west of Morehead City and 12 km south of Havelock. The office, known as NWS Newport/Morehead City, has been there since 1994, when the city of Newport granted the Weather Service land for a forecasting office. The Radar Operations Center lists the radar among the NWS Eastern Region sites with Newport as its location.
The office's own tour describes the radome behind the main building, housing a dish about 6 feet across that it says can detect severe weather up to about 125 miles away. New Bern is about 40 km to the northwest, Jacksonville about 51 km to the west and Beaufort about 21 km to the east.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
