KLTX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Wilmington, North Carolina. It stands at Shallotte in Brunswick County, about 52 km southwest of Wilmington; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is about 54 km to the southwest and Oak Island about 26 km to the east-southeast. The National Weather Service operates it from the Wilmington forecast office, which sits beside Wilmington International Airport and serves six counties in southeast North Carolina, eight in northeast South Carolina and the nearby Atlantic waters.
The office reports that the radar became operational in July 1995. In January 2023 the pedestal was refurbished and replaced under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, and in January 2024 the radar was taken down for two to three weeks to fit a new radome. During such outages the office points people to the Columbia, Raleigh, Morehead City and Charleston radars.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
