KFCX is the National Weather Service WSR-88D weather radar for Roanoke and south-western Virginia. It stands in Floyd County, about 40 km south-west of Roanoke and 26 km south-east of Blacksburg. The NWS lists the antenna elevation as 2,965 ft.
The NWS Blacksburg forecast office, at 1750 Forecast Drive in Blacksburg, is responsible for the radar; its office page says the Doppler radar is located in Floyd County. The office's area takes in 40 counties in south-west Virginia, south-east West Virginia and north-west North Carolina, including Roanoke, Lynchburg and Danville.
The NWS API, the Radar Operations Center and NCEI name the station Roanoke, while the NWS radar list gives the site as Blacksburg, the home of the forecast office. The NWS owns the radar.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
