KDOX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar named for Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. The antenna stands beside U.S. Route 113 just north of Ellendale in Sussex County, about 38 km south of Dover and 10 km south of Milford. The NWS gives its antenna elevation as 164 feet.
The Radar Operations Center lists KDOX among the Department of Defense radars in the network, and the NWS radar list records the Department of Defense as its owner. The NWS Mount Holly office, which serves Delaware, calls it the Dover radar. In July 2023 the radar was taken down for about two weeks while its antenna pedestal was refurbished under the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, a program funded by the National Weather Service, the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
