KBYX is the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar for Key West, Florida. The tower stands on the north side of Boca Chica Key, in Monroe County, about 9 km northeast of Key West. The National Weather Service operates it. The responsible office is NWS Key West at 1315 White Street, which serves the Florida Keys.
Key West has had a weather radar since early 1960, when a WSR-57 was installed at the office; a WSR-74 followed. The WSR-88D on Boca Chica Key replaced the WSR-74 and was commissioned on December 11, 1996. NCEI's archive of KBYX data begins in July 1996. The office itself moved to a hurricane-resistant building off the airport grounds in 2005.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
