KVNX is a NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar in Alfalfa County in north central Oklahoma, about 20 km east of Cherokee and 44 km northwest of Enid, toward the Kansas border. It is a Department of Defense radar: the NWS radar list names the site Vance AFB with the owner as DOD, and the Radar Operations Center lists it among the network's 21 DoD radars. Vance Air Force Base itself is in Enid. The National Weather Service office in Norman is the responsible forecast office.
The site is dual purpose. In a 2018 Norman Transcript report on an outage, the NWS said the radar also gives the base low-level wind shear information for aircraft operations, and that the Department of Defense orders the parts and does the repairs.
KVNX was the first WSR-88D fitted for dual polarization. The Radar Operations Center's history records the installation in February 2011, and Wikipedia gives 3 March 2011 as the date the modified radar went into operation. The ROC replaced the antenna's azimuth bull gear in July 2018.
Radar shows rain, snow and hail, not cloud, and nothing below its lowest beam; far from the antenna the beam passes high above the ground.
